Maddy received her Bachelors in Communications and Bachelors in Psychology from Trinity University 1996. She then acquired Master's in Public Health from Tulane in 1998. She previously worked at the Office of Public Health for Louisiana.

Maddy married Jim Vann, who is in the Navy, in December 2000. She currently sidelines as a freelance writer, medical, health, other social justice features, and is learning to play the fiddle.
