Primary Hard Disk Failure
Almost a disaster this morning. Woke to a blank computer screen with the message Primary Hard Disk Failure. After dwelling on the prospect of several dozen lost client projects and website additions while jiggling connections, I got it to come back. Now we're backing up the last few days of work, and I'm seriously considering having a backup for the backup computer.

You Defamed My Imaginary Friend!
Only in America. This weekend there is a conference to determine how defamation and property law applies to imaginary constructs in online multi-player games. If a troll defames your character in Everquest, can you sue in the real world? If someone destroys your carefully built castle, is it considered real property?

On the face of it, it seems a crazy concept. But as society moves more and more to a digital arena, and businesses and transactions move in this direction, it can become a key issue. In many cyberpunk novels, an online reality will complement, and in some cases, replace, the real world. And when that happens, these types of panels can have laid the groundwork how people can be held legally responsible for their online actions.

AOL a No-Go
Seems like technology is getting in the way of our freelancing. We have had difficulty getting emails to be sent to people with AOL accounts, and it appears to be the real culprit behind our negative feedback on eBay. Now, an eLance message was delayed for seven hours, and appears to have cost us a new client. Something has to give.

Say What?
The city of Bolina in California passed the following ballot initiative on Tuesday:
Vote for Bolinas to be a socially acknowledged nature-loving town because to like to drink the water out of the lakes to like to eat the blueberries to like the bears is not hatred to hotels and motor boats. Dakar. Temporary and way to save life, skunks and foxes (airplanes to go over the ocean) and to make it beautiful.

I wonder if I can get Newberry to pass its own indecipherable initiative "Darmok and Jilad at Tenagra. His arms wide."?

Was It Child Neglect?
So which is true? Did a couple from New Jersey starve their four adopted sons, or were they victims of fetal alcohol poisoning. I have to believe it the latter - otherwise I'd have to be confronted with deplorable level of cruelty people are capable of.

Halloween Was a Fun Ride
I went to work dressed in a Clark Kent outfit, which I could rip open to reveal my Superman costume underneath. I won the office Best Costume award, which I was completely taken aback by, and not just because I didn't know there was a Best Costume award. On the other side of the office, a quartet of women put together an impressive pirate theme. Their costumes were fantastic, and they even redecorated their section of the office with planks, ship siding, and cannons. They did win best Halloween decorations. Strangely, they won a nice plaque to hang in their office, whereas I apparently got Skeletor's cup as a prize. I HAVE THE POWWW-ERRRR!

The fence people finally called up to say they were ready to install the fence, five days late and with only 15 minutes' advance notice instead of 2 hours like I had asked. I raced home only to find that they were apparently only going to install the poles that day. Who knows when they will come back...maybe next Halloween?

We went to the Santa Fe Teaching Zoo's Boo at the Zoo festival, where they decorate the zoo on various themes. This year they did a Pirates of the Caribbean, which made me even more appreciate the job of my coworkers. After leaving there, we went home to pass out our more 'nutritious' version of Halloween - animal crackers, raisins, and toasted cheese crackers. Some of the children got treats; unfortunately a few got tricks when they ran afoul of the sand spurs dotting our yard. I felt sorry for some, but not for the dumb teenager running barefoot. At night. That's why there are such things as sidewalks, buddy.

After passing out some treats, we took Parker around the neighborhood. He really cleaned up, being one of the last trick-or-treaters, as people wanted to empty their bowls. Parker tried to go into every single one of their houses, too. We really didn't take to the chocolate, and preferred the raisins and animal crackers we had bought. We did manage to hand out most of his spoils to other children, while he wasn't looking.

At the very end of the night, we had a small group come by. They had specifically come by to see Spider-Man, and were disappointed that he wasn't there this year. I had no idea I had dedicated fans.

Trains, trains and more trains!!! Yesterday, we went to playgroup to celebrate Parker's friend, Braden's 2nd birthday. Braden had gotten a train set, and they were borrowing a train table from their neighbors. The entire thing was train-themed, and Parker was completely in his element. In fact, we got there about 11:45, and when I decided we should leave, at 4 pm, he threw a fit because we were leaving the table. He pretty much played exclusively with it (except for a short break to have cake and some other nutrition), and got upset at times when others wanted to join in. Since we ended up not having a birthday playgroup for Parker, he got many of his gifts yesterday (Jennifer, Stephen's mom, gave it to him last week). So, from his playgroup friends, he now has 3 new trains: 1 motorized engine; 1 set of motorized engine and light up passenger car; and 1 long train with coal car. He also received three books (Train Song, Chicka Chicka Sticka Sticka and The Foot Book by Seuss), a part-wooden push-go car, some play-dough with shapes cutters. He napped for about 20 minutes on the ride home, and when we got there, it was back to train fascination. We set up his little wooden track, took out all of his new trains, and sent them on their merry way. He seemed to be loving the motorized engines the most, and would get so upset when the track would get messed up.

So, for Christmas, Jeff and I have already purchased him a big train set with a table. We found it on eBay, and it seems like a great bargain. I truly hope we aren't sorely disappointed. I know Parker is going to love it. I am already envisioning him going to bed on Christmas Eve, us putting together the table, so when he wakes up Christmas morning, he will be terribly surprised. I'm excited about it already!!! Last year, we really didn't do much for Christmas. Mainly because he didn't know the difference. But, I know this year will be special. It will be like his first Christmas ever, really. He'll totally be into it, I'm sure. 'Tis the season, right? (Well, not yet, but now I kinda understand the stores' desire to start marketing now).
