Easter Traditions
We had no planned Easter traditions, so we kinda played it by ear. It was so much fun!!

First, we decorated the Easter Tree on the night before Easter. We put it on the table and made sure we put out the box of egg dyeing equipment so the Easter Bunny would know to leave eggs for us.

The next day, we dyed the eggs that the Easter Bunny left.

Then, while Parker "rested" in his room (more like, played quietly, but oh well ), the Easter Bunny came back to hide his eggs around the house!! (It had been raining the three days prior, so we opted to not do it outside.) Parker LOVED to search for his eggs and DROP them into his basket (we ate a lot of hard-boiled eggs the next day ).

Then, my parents were here at Easter, and I got some really great shots of them together:

Kira with Oma going to sleep

Kira having fun with Oma

Grampa and Kira -- and no crying!!

There are lots more pictures of her in her album ...

No Thomas for us
Unfortunately, Jeff bought tickets for him and Parker to go to Day Out with Thomas for this Saturday without looking at our calendar in advance -- we are going to a wedding on Clearwater beach that same day! So, $37 down the tubes. We have been unable to find anyone to buy them off of us, even at "best offer"!! Totally sucks.

Whose Child IS This??
Kira at 7 weeks has been sleeping through the night!!

I swear, I never believed that babies actually did this until I experienced it myself. Of course, I've been a fool and stayed up till all hours, but still!! Parker NEVER slept more than 3 hours at a time until he was like 1-1/2 or 2!! She slept Saturday night from like 11:30 pm till 7 am (I woke up at 6:40 am with one half of my sleep shirt sopping wet, a grapefruit for a breast, and running into the living room to see if she was alive --she slept in the swing)!!! Then, the next night, from about 8:30/9 pm till 5 am!! Oh, heavens!!

She also, as of Tuesday the 22nd, weighed 12 pounds!!! I just can't believe how she's chunked up! She can start wearing 3 to 6 month clothes!! My parents are coming tomorrow (oops -- today!!) and I don't know if my mom will believe that this is the same baby that was just born! She weighs more than Parker did at this same age -- I need to see how tall she is! She also has started to get a little acne, but nowhere near as bad as Parker had it.

No Diabetes Gene!!
Whoo-Hoo!! Got great news! For both Parker and Kira, we participated in a study that determines if they carry a gene that increases chances that they'll develop Type I Diabetes (it is a "high-risk" gene), ans she doesn't have it!! (Parker didn't either). So, I'm just excited to get that back.

Parker was part of the pilot program that led to the TEDDY study. They just came to our room while we were in the hospital to get our consent, and when they do the PKU heel stick, they take an extra drop or two of blood from the heel and test that. It is completely confidential as well, so it isn't part of their permanent medical records (so they can't be discriminated against for insurance purposes). Since they were both bigger babies at birth, it was nice to have the reassurance that they aren't predisposed to diabetes already.

Tharo Belton "Bud" Godfrey, son of the late D.G. and Norah Ethel Atkinson Godfrey, died on March 17 at Rutherford County Hospital. He was 83 years old. The family will meet with friends at a viewing to be held on March 19, 2005 at 12:30 PM at Prospect Baptist Church on Prospect Church Road. Services will be held at 3:00 PM with Rev. Ernie Cole officiating, followed by interment at Rutherford County Cemetery with Military Honors.

Born in Rutherford County, Mr. Godfrey served in the 13th Field Artillery Observation Battalion attached to the VII Corps Artillery during World War II. He participated in the breach of the Siegfried Line, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of the Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp in Nordhausen, earning a battlefield commission and the Bronze Star.

Upon his discharge, Mr. Godfrey owned and operated T.B. Godfrey Finance Company in Gaffney, SC, until he became a civilian Systems Analyst for the Air Force. During his employment with the US Air Force, he worked at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia and at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, Ohio. He was married to the former Myrtle Elizabeth Collins from 1941 until her death in 1997. They retired to their childhood state in 1976.

Grandpa died.
Even knowing it is coming doesn't help.
Even knowing he's had a long life (he was 83) doesn't help.
Even knowing he's finally with my granny who he adored and missed more than anything doesn't help.
Even knowing he was ready and has been for a while doesn't help.

Two Heart Attacks
Grandpa had 2 heart attacks and apparently had enzymes in his test results that somehow show a previous one days earlier (read: WHILE HE WAS IN the other hospital!!!).

My family has all gathered to be there, but of course I can't be there. I am sad, and want his passing to be peaceful if this is his time (which I feel strongly it is). I hope he goes to join my grandmother and that their long love is made whole again.

My Grandpa
I haven't been talking about what's going on with my grandfather, but it isn't looking good. First off, he's an age-onset insulin-dependent diabetic for about 20 years now, 83 years old (he'll be 84 in August).

Well, he's been talking about going into a nursing home/assisted living for about a year now, because he's had tons of nerve pain related to the diabetes, and just has started to go downhill. He's been on steroids, and the times I've seen him in the past several years, I've noticed its effects on him behaviorally.

Well, about two weeks ago now, he thought he was having a heart attack and went to his doctor. They said, yep, you've had a massive coronary -- which hospital would you like to go to? He chose Spartanburg, which has a top notch cardiac unit. Well, once they got there, they told him he hadn't had any type of heart attack, but were going to keep him and do an angiogram just to see how his heart is. Well, here's where it all goes downhill.

Apparently, when he went into the cath lab, he went ballistic and pulled out all of his tubes and was belligerent. This continued for several days, with him having brief periods of lucidity. They were talking stroke (thought the CT scan came back clear), sudden onset dementia (is this even possible??), etc., and were actually talking about committing him to the psychiatric ward! Well, my dad went up, and he and his sister who came down from NJ noticed that his blood sugar during one of these episodes was in the mid-300s!! They notified the staff, and after 30 minutes, noone had come yet to administer the insulin. THEN, they went out to bring his nurse in by hand, and she was "out to lunch"!! Can you believe that?? So, they signed out AMA without knowing what was going on, and were going to be testing his blood sugar levels every two hours.

So, now noone wants to trust a nursing home to keep his sugars under control, his wife can't be his sole caretaker anymore as she's also old and has a broken clavicle right now, and they STILL don't know what caused his massive chest pains. I'm sad knowing that it is likely that the end is near -- many of his siblings have passed on in recent years, especially the men.

Figures ... Fate's Rule
It figures that the night I stay up until 2 am doing freelance and just chilling is the night that Kira wakes up at 5 am and STAYS awake, cooing and smiling at me. I got her back to sleep around 6:45, but Parker will be up any moment now. Boy do I wish he still napped.

Another Fast Grower
I am really surprised at how quickly Kira is growing -- she weighed 11 lbs. 3 oz. yesterday at our luncheon. There was another baby girl there, who was 2 days younger, that just made 8 pounds!! I just can't believe she may be moving up to 3-6 month clothes soon.

Differences
With Parker, if he cried, he HAD to be gotten or held. He never stopped on his own, and never, ever cried to be left alone. Kira, there are times when she gets uncontrollable crying, and the only solution is to put her in the swing. Within 2 minutes, she's out. It is so trying to do it, though, because it feels so foreign to me. I just don't understand how they can be so different!!

Destined for Brown Eyes
Well, it seems pretty darn clear now that Kira isn't going to have Parker's blue eyes. Right now they look gray, but I wonder that they won't turn brown before too long.

Quick Kira Survey
Basics Stats:
How old is your babe? 1 month today!!
Most recent weight? As of yesterday, 10 lbs. 8 oz.
Most recent height? 21" at her 2 week check-up
What size clothing/shoes/dipes is she wearing? 0-3 months, Size 1 dipes.
Eye color? Hair color? Right now, I think they are gray; brown.
Birthmarks? Yes, a cafe au lait mark on her left shoulder.

Basic Functions:
How much does your baby sleep at night? About a 4 to 5 hour stretch.
Naps? How long and how many per day? Haven't been keeping track -- more than Parker did!
Breast or bottle? breast -- whenever she wants.

Milestones:
What has been herlatest accomplishment? Smiling at me and lifting head!!

Family:
How is big brother handling the newest family member? He's doing pretty well. His issues center more on sleep and agression towards us.
How are you feeling? Not too bad. Didn't really get the baby blues at all this time, but I still have this itching incision!!
How are things going in terms of family adjustment? I think it is going better than we expected. I do worry about being the sole provider for 5 straight days, though.

First Post-Partum Luncheon
We went to our first post-partum luncheon at the hospital yesterday. It was so nice this time, to not be an emotional wreck like I was when I went with Parker. My playgroup has graciously offered to have playgroups on Tuesdays for a while so that I can bring Parker by and have him there while Kira and I go to this (we can go until she's 16 weeks old) and then go and pick him up or continue to play afterwards like a regular playgroup. I think he'll really love that, and it makes life easier for my husband, who was really pushing it to ask for a three hour lunch each Tuesday!!

When I went with Parker, it was almost all boys; this time, it is almost all girls!! How ironic, hunh?? There were also a lot of second time moms there too, which was a nice thing to see (last time, there was one repeat mom there). One of the nice things about the luncheon (besides the free lunch, free lactation consultant, and free coraderie of moms withnew babies as well) is that we get to weigh our babies there. Kira weighed in, at 4 weeks old, at 10 lbs. 8 oz.!! Up 1 lb 2 oz over two weeks ago!! My chunky monkey! She's surpassed Parker!!
