Saturday, April 12, 2008 Garfield Minus Garfield I used to read Garfield when I was younger. I even had quite a number of the collected books, and was a regular watcher of the Garfield / U.S. Acres half hour on Saturday mornings. But then I grew to find the warped humor of the Far Side and the whimsical and poignant humor of Calvin and Hobbes more to my taste, and the orange tabby went to the wayside.Garfied minus Garfield, however, has brought me back. Others have attempted to do the same, by erasing Garfield's thought bubbles or substituting a more realistic cat drawing for Garfield (Realfield), but none are quite as bizarre or sad as this version: Garfield has been removed entirely, so Jon Arbuckle talks to himself, coming off as lonely, schizophrenic, and completely miserable. It should just be sad, but it comes off as hysterical, because it pushes the normalcy (or dare I say it, the Nermal-cy) of the original and makes it extremely surreal - and yet I can still identify with Jon and his reactions to the world around him. Go Now! Garfied minus Garfield! But please come back. Labels: Fun on the Web, Hey Kids - Comics, Sheer Awesome ------------------------------------------------

Saturday, January 19, 2008 Vector Magic Stanford has created an amazing tool called Vector Magic. Vector Magic converts bitmap images to vector images, through a Flash interface. Stanford's logarithm is amazing - it produces nearly perfect line artwork 100% of the time. For anyone out there who has tried to use the Live Trace feature in Illustrator, know that this is better by a factor of 1000 - it can take even the most finicky woodcut illustration and produce a perfect vector in almost no time flat.My coworker on campus now swears by it - she does a lot of illustration work by hand, and it has proved invaluable to her in transferring that work for department posters. Go over and give it a try - it's not often that you get to see the way the trick is done. Unless you are friends with Val Valentino or Mitch Pileggi, that is. Sunday, November 25, 2007 Mister Bo Jango I signed up for yet another social networking tool: Jango.Jango is a streaming music radio station network that operates in a similar fashion to Pandora, although with a much more mainstream bent (Pandora's music genome relates artists I've never heard of to my preferred musical tastes, while Jango limits the artists to more recognizable artists). Jango differs in that it allows your radio stations to be accessible to outside listeners, who can then listen too and influence your rotation of songs by voting on favorites which then have increased play in the rotation. It's a lot of fun and gives you yet another alternative for your listening pleasure during the work day. Check out my radio stations at Soundwave's Landing Page. Thursday, November 22, 2007 Ask Not For Whom the Songs Taps Songtapper says it can discern from the tapping of the space bar the rythym of a song and then can identify the song from its database. It would be awesome if it worked, especially for those songs that stick in your head but you can't quite remember the lyrics. Bur in my try it went 0 for 6. Presumably it learns from user input, but I don;t think I'd have to patience to teach its it every song I know. Maybe it's a good thing Songtapper doesn't work. After all, we all know where this kind of technology leads: ![]() ------------------------------------------------
Monday, November 05, 2007 And this is Earth Blogger has introduced a new toy called Blogger Play. It's a continually refreshing slide show that pulls images uploaded to blogger account in real time. Users can control the speed at which the images crawl and by clicking on an image can open the corresponding blog. The sheer variety of images and graphics uploaded around the world creates a candid and broad view of how the average person (with access to a computer, that is) sees the world. It's incredibly addictive.Labels: And We Are Rather Puny, Fun on the Web, Unbridled Hope for the Future, Where in the World ------------------------------------------------
Saturday, July 07, 2007 Record Robot The Record Robot presents vinyl goodies from the past. Some are good, some are bad, and some, like the Stylers, Singapore's answer to the Ventures, are a fantastic musical experience that has to be experienced. Also, the album art is not to be missed - it's a great way to see the cultural and fashion trends of times long past. If I produced local band posters (I've always wanted to do it, I admit), I'd definitely mark this as a location for inspiration! Careful - it's a definite time-consumer. Bad Robot! Tuesday, December 12, 2006 Your Daily Dose of Karate Bear-Fighting Everyone should check out Chris Sim’s Invincible Super-Blog. Written by a comic shop employee, it reads often what I’ve come to expect Clerks would sound like if I ever took the time to watch it. From the outlandish hijinks of the Golden Age to the groan-inducing inanity of the Modern, it’s the best way to keep up on comics and all that entails without having to mortgage your house for monthly subscriptions.Labels: Fun on the Web, My Heroes Have Always Worn Spandex, Sheer Awesome ------------------------------------------------
