Saturday, July 20, 2002 A Bump in the Road So we left Thursday evening to attend my 10 Year High School Reunion, a social event that is designed for those who feel they can't get enough nostalgia ina daily dai of ennui. Like myself. On the way out of the neighborhood, we discovered that the city of Newberry, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to put yet another two speed bumps on our road. Let me elucidate. Our neighborhood consists of one road, shaped like a U, that connects to a side road that is mostly frequented by horse ranchers ferrying their mares to wherever hors ranchers drive their horses to. Despite the fact that our road is very rarely travelled by itinerants who don't live in the neighborhood, apparently there are enough speed demons to warrant a total of three speed bumps along a road whose entire length is about 1/4 mile. There aren't any blind curves, and anyone turning into our community is instantly aware of the scores of children running amuck in the street. Three road bumps is overkill, especially on a road where the posted speed limit is 30. To make matters worse, every speed bump is heralded by a large sign that announces, to anyone who doesn't happen to actually look at the road, that they are APPROACHING A SPEED BUMP (15 MPH). Right next to each bump is another sign that states SPEED BUMP. There are four of these signs for each bump, one set for each direction. I thought it was bad when they painted the fire hydrant neon green... ------------------------------------------------
