A Material Girl
A surreal moment today at Wal-Mart. As Kristin and I found ourselves frustrated by the fact that everything we were looking for was out of stock, we passed a girl who was the very definition of consumer spending. She had at least three different hats on her had, price tags waving in the artifically created 'wind' of the air system. She was trying on some large pink glasses that I recall might have been the subject of a ZZ Top song. She was wearing three separate belts that each seemed to be loosely draped through three loops of her pants - these were all still adorned with price tags as well. On her back was an oversized Winnie the Pooh backpack, all neon pink and incongruous with the rest of her outfit.

As we walked by, the glasses slowly moved with our passage, and, in a singsong voice, she chanted "Wal-Mart is the best place to shop. Ever."

Cultural materalism/imperialism, look at what you hath wrought.
