Today we learned about the glass harmonica, a musical instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin that mimics the sound of glasses half-filled with water. This otherworldly instrument soon was abandoned after its use in hypnotism by Franz Mesmer, and the fact that those who played it were eventually driven mad (at the time it was believed the music caused dementia, but later scholars believed it was lead used in the construction). It's truly a fascinating piece of engineering.
