Friday, June 13, 2003 If An Art Show Was Held in the Forest... So I have to say I'm getting REALLY peeved. In about ten hours I'll be taking part in my first art show. I've put together a few photos and put some considerable time and money into getting them show ready. It was my understanding that the small gallery we are showing at would take care of the advertising for the show. They did put together flyers and cards for the shows, which were distributed around both by them and the people in the show. It was my understaning that the gallery would handle getting the word out to local publications. The other day I was at Denny's and saw a copy of FYI, a local college magazine. I did not see a listing for the show in this week's cultural calendar. I really wasn't concerned - FYI has a small circulation on campus, and it isn;t like students have any type of purchasing money (except for pizza, Playstation Games, and beer). Today, I'm looking at the weekend edition of the Gainesville Sun. Surprisingly, I can't find any mention of our show anywhere in the cultural section or calendar. I then went to find it on their website - NOTHING. Micheal shrugs and says what can we do. He rationalizes that any number of reasons could be given for why it is not there, from an editorial decision to the fact that it might have been printed in last week's entertainment magazine. I take a different view - I'm wondering if any magazine or newspaper was contacted. The price for showing in the gallery was very small, I know, and was a good price for the print collateral we received, the space, and refreshments. But sending information to local publications is FREE - it doesn;' cost anyone anything but time. If I had known, I would have taken time to go out and do it myself. Being in the Sun, to me, is the single most important piece of promotion for the show. Now I'm worried I won't sell a thing. ------------------------------------------------
