Friday, September 24, 2004 Ultrasound results and musings So, Jeff and I are expecting our second baby at the end of January/beginning of February. We just had our 22-week ultrasound, and this baby decided we shouldn't know if he's a he or she's a she. I'm trying to get over my need to know, but it is admittedly hard for me to do. Because I had a C-section last time, I am encountering the bureaucracy of ACOG and insurance companies. Choosing to pursue a vaginal birth after cesarean, commonly called a VBAC, is becoming rarer and rarer, not because it is scientifically based, but because of liability. So, I am having to fight to do what is in my and my child's best interest. I understand that most people who have never had a cesarean can't really understand what the big deal is, and I can't expect you to. I do expect that you acknowledge that TO ME it is a big deal, I have done tons of research, I am as interested in having a healthy baby safely as you are and as the doctor is, but I am not willing to be cut open to avoid certain low risks while at the same time exposing myself and my baby to other risks which can be just as or more detrimental. If you want to debate this with me, take a week, read up ALL YOU CAN on VBAC, and then come back and we can have an intelligent debate, though I doubt it would even cross your mind at that point. Okay? Parker is blossoming and every day I learn something new about him, and am amazed at how smart he truly is (yes, I know every mom says this. And I know he isn't a savant, but I'm just amazed that he's not even 3 yet, and he knows so much!!). ------------------------------------------------
