No Diabetes Gene!!
Whoo-Hoo!! Got great news! For both Parker and Kira, we participated in a study that determines if they carry a gene that increases chances that they'll develop Type I Diabetes (it is a "high-risk" gene), ans she doesn't have it!! (Parker didn't either). So, I'm just excited to get that back.
Parker was part of the pilot program that led to the TEDDY study. They just came to our room while we were in the hospital to get our consent, and when they do the PKU heel stick, they take an extra drop or two of blood from the heel and test that. It is completely confidential as well, so it isn't part of their permanent medical records (so they can't be discriminated against for insurance purposes). Since they were both bigger babies at birth, it was nice to have the reassurance that they aren't predisposed to diabetes already.
