Scorched Earth
I find it truly pathetic that the Israeli government would decide to demolish the settlements entirely than let them fall into Palestinian hands after the withdrawal. It seems callous and petty. Regardless of concerns that the homes will only go to Hamas leaders and not refugees, the settlements and their greenhouses are valuable property that could potentially do a greater good for the Palestinians, giving them an infrastructure on which to rebuild a state. Taking that away from them seems to be one last attempt to claim a 'victory' with that portion of the Israeli populace who disagreed with the withdrawal.
